We can tell you the difference between hub-drive and mid-drive, how many kilometres per charge, and other technical details, but we'll also ask you the real questions, such as how far you'll be riding and how often, how many hills are in your route, and what you'll be carrying on your bike. Our Picks for the Best Electric Bikes in Australia

What makes an ebike The Best? The overall quality and reliability of the brand and components are what make some ebikes objectively "better" than others (and often more expensive). More importantly, we also consider what's going to be best for you. Ultimately, you are the only one that can decide on your perfect bike; we're here to ensure that no matter which bike you choose, you'll be riding something safe and high quality. All our bikes are road-legal and certified for NSW, and most are EN15194 compliant (mandatory in NSW from 2029), so no matter what type of rider you are, or what type of riding you want to do, you can be confident in whichever bike you choose from Glow Worm. Listed below are our picks for the best ebikes based on use. Each pick names a real bike we stock, the rider it suits, and why it suits them. So, which rider are you?

The daily commuter

The Lekker Urban Series is the perfect pick for a commuter riding up to 10km each way, with mudguards, a rack and lights as standard. These bikes are comfortable and affordable, reliable and unproblematic. You'll get a strong feeling of propulsion from the motor, and a decent amount of kilometres per charge. In the Urban range, Lekker offer the Jordaan and Amsterdam

Trade-off

The Lekker Urban series runs on a chain, which will need some TLC every now and then. To keep everything running smoothly, lubricate it every few hundred kilometres. Read our article on caring for your ebike.

Runner up

The Lekker GTS (either Amsterdam or Jordaan) runs on a belt, rather than a chain, so it's smoother, cleaner, & almost no maintenance. It's a little pricier, but worth the upgrade, particularly if you live on the coast.

The school-runner

When it comes to the school run, the Tern Quick Haul Long can't be beat. With plenty of space for two passengers, you can take kids of all ages (or even an adult!) as well as kit and cargo. Choose individual accessories from Tern's wide range of compatible options, or get great value with a Passenger Pack. You'll get more than enough assistance from the gold-standard Bosch mid-drive motor, and a battery to go the distance. See this article for more info on hub-drive vs mid-drive motors.

Trade-off

The Quick Haul Long does not have any suspension so some riders find it bumpy; unlike other Tern bikes the handlebars do not fold, so it's not the most compact longtail.

Runner up

The Vamos Amigo Plus comes with suspension, a folding stem, a passenger pack for all your accessory needs, and hub-drive propulsion, all at a very affordable price point.

Trade-off

There's nothing fancy here - entry-level components, a low-torque motor and small battery keep the E20 simple, light and affordable.

Runner up

At the premium end of the market, look no further than the Tern Vektron P5i. Fully folding with top of the line components and the gold standard Tern x Bosch combo. Expect a price point to match, but don't expect to be disappointed.

The new e-biker

The Velectrix Cruiser is everything you could ask for in an entry-level ebike. With hydraulic brakes and Shimano components, this bike suits a rider buying their first ebike, or looking for a budget option without compromising on quality. Light and economical, the swept-back bars make for comfortable riding, and a low step-through & saddle-height suits shorter riders.

Trade-off

This is as stripped back as it gets: no mudguards, rack, lights or suspension. Perfect for someone who may already have lights or a rack, and who's ready to level up without the extra expense.

Runner up

The Velectrix Urban is fully equipped with everything you need to roll out the door: lights, mudguards, rear rack and front suspension. You'll pay a bit more, but all you need is a helmet and you're ready to go.

The all-of-the-above

The Tern GSD S10 is the perfect do-it-all-mobile. Carry two kids + school bags + groceries? Check. Comfortable enough for the daily commute? Check. Enough battery range for long weekend rides? Check. Compact enough to store in small spaces, and to suit small riders? Check and check. If you can't decide on a bike, this mighty machine is worth some serious consideration. Trade-off

It's a higher price point than many bikes in our range, but when you consider that the GSD does everything a small car can do and more, the value outweighs the cost.

What's next: Book A Test Ride

Online research can be helpful to wrap your head around what's out there, and to start thinking about what bikes you like, or what's available in your budget. But there is one thing the internet can't offer, and that's a test ride.

Why test ride?

Fit and feel are very subjective, and test riding - even a similar bike - is the quickest way to narrow down your preferences. We've found that many riders surprise themselves with the model they like the most. Fifteen minutes on a bike tells you more than fifty online reviews!

Book a test ride online

Ride the loop around the block on quiet backstreets, head up the hill to test the power of the motor, or ride further afield to get a real sense of the feel of the bike. Book a 30 minute block and try one bike, or try as many as you like. We are located at 117 Addison Road, Marrickville, Sydney. Open for test rides 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, and 10am-3pm on Saturdays (closed Sundays). Book a free test ride here.

What to bring

Bring your ID, and wear clothes and shoes that you are comfortable riding in. Bring your helmet, or borrow one of our test ride helmets. Most importantly, bring your questions! We'll answer them all.
